“Why Do My Teeth Hurt
When I Drink Cold Water?”

Understanding Sensitive Teeth
You’re enjoying your morning iced coffee when suddenly — a sharp, uncomfortable sensation shoots through one of your teeth. For some people, it happens while eating ice cream. Others notice it during brushing, drinking cold water, or even while breathing in cold air inside the office.

Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common reasons patients visit a dental clinic in Johor Bahru today, especially among adults with busy lifestyles, coffee habits, stress-related grinding, or previous whitening treatments. At E&E Dental, we often meet patients who thought sensitive teeth were simply something they had to “live with,” only to discover there was actually an underlying dental issue causing the discomfort.

What Is Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity, also known as dentine hypersensitivity, happens when the protective layer of the tooth becomes thinner or exposed. Normally, enamel shields the teeth from hot, cold, sweet, and acidic foods. But once the enamel wears down — or the gums recede — the inner layer of the tooth becomes exposed, allowing sensations to reach the nerves more easily. That is when patients begin experiencing the sudden “zing” or sharp discomfort many describe.

Why Are My Teeth Suddenly Sensitive?

There are several possible causes behind sensitive teeth, and in many cases, it is a combination of factors.

“Why Do My Teeth Hurt When I Drink Cold Water?”

1   Abrasion From
Brushing Too Hard
One of the most overlooked causes of sensitive teeth is brushing too aggressively. Many people believe brushing harder means cleaning better, but excessive brushing pressure or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can slowly wear away enamel and gums over time.

This type of abrasion commonly happens near the gumline and may eventually expose the sensitive inner layer of the tooth. At E&E Dental, this is one of the most common causes of tooth sensitivity we see in daily practice.

2   Worn Enamel From
Daily Habits
Modern lifestyles often contribute more to enamel wear than people realise. Frequent coffee consumption, acidic drinks, aggressive brushing, and even stress-related teeth clenching can slowly weaken enamel over time.

This is especially common among working adults travelling between Singapore and Johor Bahru who consume multiple cups of coffee
daily while dealing with long working hours and stress.

3   Teeth Grinding
& Clenching
Night grinding and jaw clenching are becoming increasingly common. Many patients do not even realise they grind during sleep until they start waking up with jaw soreness, headaches, or sensitive teeth.

The constant pressure can slowly wear down enamel and create tiny cracks that make the teeth more reactive to temperature changes.

4   Gum Recession
When gums recede, the roots of the teeth become exposed.

Unlike the visible part of the tooth, the root surface does not have thick enamel protection, making it much more sensitive to cold drinks and touch.

5   Cavities, Cracks,
or Old Fillings
Sometimes, sensitivity is not “just sensitivity.” A cracked tooth, leaking filling, or early tooth decay may also cause discomfort when eating or drinking.

This is why persistent sensitivity should always be properly checked by a dentist before it worsens.

6   Teeth Whitening
Treatments
Teeth whitening is one of the most popular aesthetic dental treatments today, especially among patients preparing for weddings, work presentations, or social events.

However, patients with naturally thin enamel may experience temporary sensitivity after whitening procedures. Fortunately, this is usually manageable with proper care and professional guidance.

Signs You Should Not Ignore

You should consider getting a dental check-up if:

Chewing efficiency
Cold drinks trigger sharp pain

Speech clarity
Sensitivity lingers after eating
or drinking

Bite balance
One tooth
feels significantly more sensitive
than others

Jawbone support
You experience pain when biting

Long-term stability of surrounding teeth
The discomfort becomes more frequent over time

Early treatment often helps prevent more complicated dental problems later on.

Treatment Options for Sensitive Teeth

At E&E Dental, treatment is customised based on the actual cause of the sensitivity.

1   Laser Therapy for Sensitive Teeth
Laser treatment has become increasingly popular in modern dental clinics for managing sensitive teeth and inflamed gum tissues.

The therapy may help:
  Reduce nerve sensitivity
  Calm inflamed tissues
Improve comfort during eating and drinking
  Support healing in sensitive areas
Many patients appreciate that it is comfortable, minimally invasive, and suitable for persistent sensitivity cases.

2   Desensitising Treatment
For mild to moderate cases, desensitising treatment may help reduce nerve stimulation inside the tooth. This can make daily activities like eating, drinking,
and brushing much more comfortable again.

3   Fluoride & Remineralisation Therapy
Professional fluoride treatment helps strengthen weakened enamel and reduce sensitivity. For early enamel wear, remineralisation therapy may also help restore minerals back into the tooth surface before the damage becomes more severe.

4   Night Guard for Teeth Grinding
For patients who grind or clench during sleep, a custom-made night guard can help protect the teeth from further enamel wear.
Reducing excessive pressure on the teeth also helps prevent sensitivity from worsening over time.

5   Restorative Dental Treatment
If the sensitivity is caused by cavities, cracked teeth, or worn restorations, treatment may involve:
  Tooth-coloured fillings
  Replacing old fillings
  Dental crowns
  Gum treatment for exposed roots
The goal is always to preserve the natural tooth while restoring comfort and function.

Final Thoughts

Sensitive teeth may start as a small annoyance, but they are often an early warning sign that your teeth need attention. Ignoring the problem may eventually lead to worsening discomfort, cracked teeth, or more complicated treatment in the future.

At E&E Dental, we focus on identifying the real cause behind tooth sensitivity and helping patients regain comfort in their daily lives — whether it is enjoying cold drinks again, reducing pain while brushing, or protecting their teeth from further damage. For many patients in Johor Bahru and even those visiting from Singapore for dental care, early treatment makes a significant difference in preventing long-term dental problems.

Best dental clinic with professional doctors, good customer service, nice environment and reasonable price. Had a wisdom tooth extraction surgery here, the doctors are very caring, patient and professional throughout the whole process. Not a big deal but would be better if the instructions on medication from doctor and front desk to be the same. Had an excellent experience here and will visit again.
